Well I have never seen this before a Bearded Damsel Fish? Any idea, fungus? spikes - urchin? or real. The picture has not been doctored other than cropping and brightness and was taken yesterday.

Wow, great shot. My bet is he was messing with a Fire Worm. Damsels have no fear and if a Fire Worm came near his garden or eggs this could be the result.
