I'm heading down to Bonaire in a week and just found out the island uses 50Hz not 60Hz for its electrical output. My battery charger to charge my batteries for the underwater camera requires 60Hz. Right now I can't find a converter to take with me and don't want to burn up my charger or bring a ton of batteries. Are there converters on the island? I did burn up a charger in Aruba three years ago.

Thanks

make sure your charger is not actually 50/60Hz 110-220V - most are these days...

some devices can be charged from an AA battery pack - check if there is that sort of device available for your battery...

dive shops may be able to provide an overnight charge...

or just bring enough batteries;)

good luck!

(take good pics)

Patrick is correct Bear if there weren't responses to your multiple posts I would have pulled all but one of them. Please do NOT post multiple posts that are the same wording in different threads..Our community here peruses all the threads and you will get your answer just the same and actually probably quicker if you only post one question in one thread..

Bear,
I cooked my charger last year on Bonaire. Went into the electronics store in town next to the tourism office(on your right as you start north on the one-way). Found another AA charger at a good price, then the owner GAVE me another transformer to use with the set that would work without an issue. I said several times that I wanted to pay for the extra transformer but they just smiled and sent me on my way. Nice folks in that shop! He also told me not to use the other transformer until I got back to the states. Two trips since and dozens of charges with no problems. Hope this helps.

Can some one who knows the name of that store post it for me, please?

Smack

Smack,
Thanks for the information about the charger. I did do some research since I posted my first message, and I'm told, not to worry, because the 50 Hz should not effect the transformer. I leave in two hours, so hopefully everything will turn out OK.
Can't wait to get there.

smack, the store used to be benzers...might still be. i thought they changed owners/names.

bear is right...a xfmr won't affect the hertz, only the voltage. i'm not sure that the difference in the 50/60hz will affect a charger either...i've asked electricians about it and haven't gotten a definitive answer yet. 50hz makes motors and electronic timers (microwaves, clocks, etc.) run slower but shouldn't have any effect on a charger. what will hurt a charger is the higher voltage and the occasional voltage surges. only leave your chargers plugged in for as long as you are charging then unplug them.
