Hi everyone, I just purchase a Nikon 7600 and an Iklite housing. I've got a Sunpak G flash on order which comes complete with tray and arm. Is my housing going to attach to the strobe or do I need to also order an Ikelite tray and attach the sunpak strobe to it.

The sunpak G flash comes with a handle/tray and has a 1/4x20" tripod socket. So, if the ikelite housing for the Nikon 7600 has a tripod mount on the bottom it will screw right in (which most enclosures have).

Thanks Greg, I'll check my housing as soon as it arrives. Just love looking at everyones pictures of underwater Bonaire. Keep 'em coming.

Good choice, Marge. You will like that camera. Play with it out of the water, in the UW case with the strobe, lots. Flowers and insects are good subjects. Any time spent learning the camera out of the water will save dive time later.

Marge or Greg

Can you tell me if the Sunpak G flash is compatible with the Olympus P-20 Housing for Olympus 5060.
How is that works? is the strobe comes with wires? please let me know
Thank you

Jorge I believe it is a slave strobe (fires based on the internal strobe) and there aren't any wires, but I have not personally used this strobe.

Yes, the Sunpak is a slave strobe. Everywhere I checked the G flash is back ordered. The company I ordered mine through, told me today that they expect several shipments in the middle of April. I'll cross my fingers and let you all know when I get word it shipped. Just in case, what other strobes are available for under $200 that have adjustments?

Not many that I'm aware of.

But if you wish to review and compare data compiled on 53 other underwater strobes, you may visit the Strobe Finder on digitaldiver.net :

http://www.digitaldiver.net/strobes.php

It is a free site. You do not have to sign up in order to browse...........

I checked that web site but they don't list Bonica and it's on sale for $199 right now. Bonica Neon III Strobe; It's $299 and more at other web sites. Do you have any experience with it. Any opinions?

Marge,

When I began compiling data for the Strobe Finder, I could not find any data (specifications) online regarding Bonica strobes or SeaLife. I emailed both companies requesting data. I did not receive a reply from either company. Therefore those two companies were unable to be included in the database (nine other underwater strobe manufacturers are represented). Their absense from the database is not a reflection of the quality of their products. Only the inability to access required information.

I have no experience with Bonica nor have I heard any positive or negative comments about their products.

One of the companies that you listed in another thread and requested feedback on, leisurepro.com , is a reputable company located in New York City. I've been inside their store and have purchased a U.K. Mini Q 40 underwater flashlight from them.

As far as opinions, I believe that many divers view strobe choices carefully considering that when chosen wisely, the strobe could be spared when the upgrade bug hits. Strobes don't change as fast as cameras do. Pick a good one that you can grow with and chances are you'll save money in the long run. And quality equipment retains resale value.

I assume BT posting rules would prohibit specific names of retailers to recommend. But I can assure you that a company that specializes in underwater photography (as opposed to an online megastore), is your best choice, especially when it comes to strobes. Their expertise in helping you choose the right one, and just as important how to set it up and use it, will add significantly to your overall enjoyment.

bon sueltu!
kbob

Kbob,

Thank you for your response. I'm trying to keep my costs down. Brand new to this digital age. Brand new camera, Ikelite housing on the way. So not much money left for strobe. E-mail me with suggestions, if you please. margeka@comcast.net

marge,

i'm gonna take what kbob suggested a little furthur...an inexpensive strobe may not turn out to be such a good deal - looks like you would need a tray, a cord, an arm, and the strobe for your existing housing. might be better off just using the internal strobe and see what you think.

i consider the DS-125 strobe/arm/controller package to be an adequate (minimum) strobe that will function with about anything and will survive lots of dives. but who wants to spend more on the strobe than the cost of the camera and the housing? :-(

may be a tough choice to make;)

oh, and if you "strobe-less" be sure to get the ikelite color correction filter for your ikelite housing port. i have obtained decent results down to 60' using just the filter...

and underexposed, color deficient pics are what photoshop was made for!!!

good luck,

Bob, I have the Ike DS-125 with manual controller and tray/arm system from Ikelite. I purchased it as a kit from a reputable online camera store in NYC. I have a camera (Oly 5050) and Oly housing which were less expensive than the strobe outfit. When the camera craps out or I decide to upgrade I will be able to use the Ike equipment on virtually any new set up I buy. It was money well spent.

well for those who still can't do a strobe...

pics are taken with filter (ikelite which i think is actually a UR Pro) and then level adjusted in photoshop...
