Those of you who own an Olympus 5050 may be interested in the fact that Olympus and several other manufacturers including Canon, Fuji, Konica Minolta, Nikon, Ricoh, and Sony have been experiencing problems with the CCD on their digital cameras.

For those with less technical background, the CCD is the charged-coupled device, a computer chip in the camera that serves the same purpose as film in a non digital camera.

See Consumer Reports info at www.consumerreports.org/cro/electronics-computers/chip-problem-with-some-digital-cameras-and-camcorders-1105.htm

Olympus also has info at www.olympusamerica.com/files/C5050C730Advisory.pdf

I myself have this problem, and after dragging my feet so to speak, for a couple months finally contacted Olympus today about this. Long story short, even though my camera was purchased reconditioned from Olympus America, they have agreed to repair it at no cost to me. They even are offering to reimburse me for shipping expenses. You gotta love that kind of service!!!

One interesting note that heat and humidity seem to contribute to the failure of the CCD. Since I live in the humid South, and prefer to vacation in places where I can dive, it seems inevitable that this would happen.

If you haven’t experienced a situation like this, it’s quite possible you might. Contact your service department to see if preventive maintenance is offered. It would be a major drag to have this happen while on vacation.

Philip
