When we were in the BVI's, I came across this fish. It was about 3 1/2 to 4 feet long. He was in a cave and was in the crevice. When I came in, he came out, kind of like guarding. He had big eyes as well. He was green, with a little bit of other colors on him as well. Can anyone identify this guy, I'd be much obliged! His lips weren't really big like a grouper, and since he was green, with other colors it has me stumped!

Tim, I just googled cubera snapper...they say brown to grey, this guy was green...he did have a red tinge, like some of the sights say...and his eyes were BIG...I mean, when I took the picture, and the flash went off, I felt bad cause he LOOKED AT ME and I could see the white of his big ole' eye (I felt bad cause obviously the flash bothered him), or in my mind that's what I thought he thought...LOL.

Michael seemed to think he was a grouper, but I don't think his jaw as big enough...so, cubera snapper...grouper...???

Thanks Bruce, but the only stripes or color were toward the dorsal fin. The rest was green and red...I couldn't find anything in the Huuman book at all that looked like this guy...rare BVI species maybe? LOL!

Please keep the suggestions coming folks...Seb...7Mare, where are you???

How about Red Grouper, although I think the Cubera Snapper is more likely. Colours are a not a good clue as remember blood is green at depth.

Looks like a big snapper, could be a Cubera or maybe a larger than normal schoolmaster!

Fish often change colour when hunting, being hunted, mating guarding eggs etc

I'd say mutton snapper. :-)
We had some of those guys following us around on several dives lately. In Roaton, one was our nightly companion - seemed to get a thrill out of freaking us out by swooping in on us from nowhere!
