Henrik,

Your images are outstanding. Please tell me more about your set up. What strobe system are you using? Are these Ikelite eTTL? Manual? What lens are you using for the macro images?

Thanks for sharing. They are some of the most magnificent images that I've ever seen posted on this site.

And one of my own favourites of a tarpoon under the Salt Pier.

Salt Pier

Thank you for all the nice words!! I will absolutely post more pics for you!

About the rig:
Most macros are taken with Canon 100mm lens (some with Sigma 50mm) and two strobes from Sea&Sea, YS90 and YS300.
For wide angle shots Iīve used Canon 18-55mm and a single strobe, YS300.
I only use manual settings on camera and flashes to get the most control over things.

For the next Bonaire trip in September Iīll bring my new toy, a 10-22mm zoom and hopefully get better or at least wider shots of Hilma.

Brilliant photos, great focus, composition and exposure. I love the simplicity of the Christmas tree worm at the Hooker. Do you shoot in RAW mode, TIFF or J-peg?

Henrik,
Professional quality images! To follow up on another post(I don't know if another thread was started)...

Do you shoot in RAW mode and process with Photoshop CS? What is you favorite color correction method in PS - curves white point or grey point or just auto levels? Do you use an external light meter to set f-stop, shutter and strobe power? Do you use any auto bracket feature within the camera with same strobe power?
Thank You,
Dan

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Henrik Jonsson (BonaireTalker - Post #28) on Tuesday, May 10, 2005 - 5:53 am:     Edit PostPrint Post

Thanks Dan

I usually shot in JPEG (highest quality) with some colour correction in PhotoShop 7. Mostly I use curves with black and white points. For shots with only natural light i often use RAW.

Both camera and srobes are in manual mode without any other light meter than the cameras own. I use the information in the histogram to adjust the exposure during the dive. In the prewiev picture on the back of the camera I can see if I got the fish the way I wanted it, but not the exposure or focus.

Henrik,
I appreciate the technical information. We have good success using natural light with manual white balance and a UR Pro CY filter. Our Olympus 5060 and 7070 has the histogram feature. Looks like we need to start using it! Did you ever use the Cannon eTTL capability in the housing and decided that manual was better?

It is nice that your camera has interchangeable lenses. Do you use the dome with your macro lens as well or do you have a flat port for macro?
thanks again!

Dan,
I hope to learn more about how to use manual WB next year. When I did the trip in september the camera was new to me. Since I was use to have a analog camera I used the digital more or less as a analog.
I have the first ikelite housing without the eTTL so I didīnt really have a choice.
I use a flat port for macro.
It would e interesting to see your pictures. Where can I do that? On the web or do I have to go to Virginia...;-)

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Dan Yuchnovicz (New BonaireTalk Poster - Post #3) on Thursday, May 12, 2005 - 11:28 am:     Edit PostPrint Post

Henrik,
go to www.chesapeakebaydiving.com/BonairePix.htm The shots starting with "Spotted Eagle Ray" and ending with "I'm a cowfish of some type?" were shot by my wife with the Olympus 5060WZ and dual Ikelite DS125s using the ike TTL that is in the Ike housing. She uses an INON diopter for macro and Epoque DCL-20 for wide angle. Both are wet lenses that attach to the flat port. We need a dome port as well.

The "Spotted Eagle Ray" was taken with a UR Pro CY filter and manual "one touch" WB and camera set to Shutter Priority. For this shot f stop was almost wide open at about 1/125s as I recall. We had to keep an eye on the shutter speed and not shoot below 1/30 sec. The sand at Invisibles is very white and makes a great place to manual WB off the bottom. I'm told that a neutral grey card works better. Will try next time. This is my wifes third outing with this set up and she improves every time. We now have a Oly 7070 that fits in the same ike housing. Can't wait to try it. She wanted high quality "point and shoot". But now she is experimenting more with settings because of improved quality. She will typically shoot 80 - 120 shots on a one-hour dive and deletes all but about 10-20 after reviewing on land. Digital is great. We have 1.5 GB of memory in the 7070 so we can start using RAW mode. I have not tried it yet.

The shot "Anen-amen-am-nenomes" was with my VX-2100 "digital still capture" (only VGA) with manual WB and UR Pro CY. The "Spotted Moray Eel Glamor Shot!" was taken at night with my 50w halogen video light. I note astigmatism on the edges when in too close with the ike dome and internal Raynon .67x lens. Closeup is great without the Raynon though. The "Spotted Eagle Ray looking for food" was also with UR Pro CY and manual WB. "Ruthie Having Fun" is manual WB with no filters because we are in 10ft of water.

I want to try using the Oly7070 not with flash, but with my video light at night. Color is pretty good and focusing should be better.

thx again for the info Henrik!
Dan Y
