Tough to get a positive ID on this little girl due to her transparency. Possibly a female blackhead (or darkhead) blenny.

If any of you can to come up with a better name, I'm listening :-)

Mare,

Thanks!

I had a marine biologist who specializes in Caribbean species mention to me that a positive ID might be impossible without dissecting....

BTW, My Humann~Deloach I.D. book is so old that it has an image of an Icthysaur on the cover...

:-)

Bob, the ReefNet Fishes of the Caribbean and Adjacent waters CD allows one to click on several pictures, and resize. If you have your picture on your computer screen, you can click around and really compare their shots with yours. Great stuff for only $25. For any and all who may be interested:

Mare,
I got the $75 dollar version of it when I was in Bonaire and it is absolutely incredible!!!! Most of the dive shops carry it on island. The video is simply amazing!!! And you can create certain groups of fish that you want to study for a certain area that you are going to. It shows all phases of the fish which I think is a great option. It just has so much to offer a person who studies fish life in the Caribbean. I highly recommend this version!

Unfortunately I've made this mistake on more than one occasion.

I'll find a subject that intrigues me and I immediately contemplate creative photographic compositions as opposed to shots that would be more helpful in identifying the subject.

For instance, is this a juvenile lantern bass or harlequin? If I had only taken one more image instead from the side, chances are I could come up with a positive match........

bass

oh well,
live and learn....

meanwhile I'll set aside some scuba bucks for some ID software.....

Darlene, I LOVE the fish quizzes! I'm even beginning to get good at the sketches.
I also like their search feature. you can enter as much as you know about the fish you are trying to identify and the software narrows the field down to a couple of good choices.
