Olympus housings have needed an external flash when using a wide angle lens for a while, I know the 5050 needs one if you use a proper macro lens.

I saw the Oly 7070 at the Consumer Electronics Show at the beginning of the month in Las Vegas. Its zoom lens goes down to 28mm (equiv.), and they have an external strobe housing for an Oly strobe which connects by water proof cable to the Oly 7070 housing (guy didn't have the part number). Camera also has several UW shooting modes which presumably do automatic color balancing.

Would be very curious to hear about anyone getting and using such a rig...

Jake

Nice looking camera for you cultists. I'd be surprised if a white slate will not still be required for white balance.

Freddie - yes - prices for the gear seem reasonable, and it's all from Olympus.

Martin - maybe. But it would probably require me diving more, and I'd have to be certain it would work the way I want. I truly despise manually set slave strobes - I know the pros swear by it, but give me a decent cable-connected TTL strobe any time and I'll be much happier.

Jake,

If you go the strict Oly route, you'll be limited to their underpowered topside FL 20 strobe and dedicated strobe housing. OTOH, Ikelite has already cracked the Olympus TTL code. They were able to retrofit original 5050 housings and beginning with the 5060, began offering the hardwiring TTL option for all newer housing models. Same for the Canon DSLR's. Nikon is the next hurdle for the Ikelite technicians.

As long as you use one of the Ikelite DS substrobes (if you still have yours, it may possibly need an update) and one of their housings, you can take advantage of the flash metering technique.

I love watching people spend money : )
