Could anyone give a list of the best dive sites for taking pics. Like to stay around 50 ft. Thanks.

I am also interested in anyone's advice on good photo sites. I will be in Bonaire in September, but am already researching dive sites.

In particular I want to know if anyone has any recommendations on good macro vs. wide angle sites. I still shoot with a Nikonos III so I have to decide at the beginning which to shoot. I know that Bonaire is macro heaven, but I imagine there must be some neat reef scenics or a wreck or something else that would look good in wide angle.

Many thanks,
Laurie

Several observations (my apologies if they are obvious)

1) If you are shore diving, you may want a site where the entry and exit are easier to manage -- especially if you are diving solo or if your partner carries a camera. Nothing like falling as you exit while trying to save the gear.
2) For shore diving, closer to your hotel is also easier (i.e., film changes at the hotel are always easier than in the front seat of the car/truck).
3) Viz matters - I think wide angle work best on the clearest days/sites.
4) Most dive sites at 50 FSW (on Bonaire) are very nice.
5) What do you want your subject and the topography to be? (Some sites tend to have more or less of any one thing -- soft coral, plate coral, crabs, eels, tarpon, etc.)
6) Ask photo staff on the island (i.e., at Cptn. Dons or Photo Tours) for their favorites.

In terms of wide angle, I like the Hilma Hooker as well as some of the more northern sites such as old blue, Karpata (anchor), and rappel; the far south (i.e., Red Slave) and the double reef areas.

For macro, I think almost any site has something to offer -- sometimes the best subjects are in less than 15 FSW (and sometimes not) although shooting off the sand can be a challenge. Also, I think the more you dive a site the more you start to notice macro .

Taking pictures at night (macro), is a lot of fun as well (especially if the strobe has a modeling light). My personal favorites are Calabas (sp?) and Oil Slick.

Disclaimer: I have not done any dives around Klein so I cannot offer any comment (one way or the other). I dive w/o a camera most (but not all) of the time while my brother dives with one virtually every dive.

Macro or wide angle dive sites - thats a tough question. Most dives are both as anything can and often does turn up. My wife and I have a Sea&Sea MMII and a Sony P9 with the Sea&Sea adaptor so we share lenses. There's always a fight for the wide angle lens when we find a bait ball or a turtle.

Even some sites such as Salt Pier which is reknown for Wide Angle shots has lots of macro opportunities too. I think the best answer is to go to Bonaire twice as often - one time for macro and the next for wide angle.
