Yes, UW Photography is Difficult

I tried it.

coral

I found out that diving while holding a camera is tiring and tricky and photos are rarely successful. WOW, do I admire the beautiful photos people come out with!

Yes, thank you, I took that photo, but there aren't any more beautiful photos to speak of among my 112 experiments. I did tell Tim at Fish Eye Photo that I would make some kind of artwork or graphic design with them since they were so funky, but I haven't gotten there yet. First, the trip report, right?

Lots of practice helps :-)

We generally hope for one or two good images out of a roll of film.

Instruction is useful too... Faith and I did the Nikon School of Underwater Photography back in July 2000. I can't say enough about how much we learned in a week, and how much our shooting improved. We had an outstanding instructor for that week, and still stay in touch with her.

Some of our photos are online, but most aren't at this point (www.senie.com/scuba to see what is online, and some old trip reports)

Dan

Niki, nice shot (and I buy that genus). There's a lot to be said for the shotgun approach, shoot everything that moves and most things that don't. Digital allows this freedom. The learning comes when you edit the shots and ask yourself why the hell you took these pictures with that lighting, from that angle, focus or distance. Now that I've been doing it for a bit, I don't find I shoot less pictures, I do find the ones I do shoot are better.

OH, Niki, how could I have FORGOTTEN it was a eusmilia fastigiata of the caryophylliida suborder! Uh, can you please pronounce it phonetically or is there a "slang" word for it like...green squishy thing that looks good enough to eat? Looks like somethin' ya'd see in one of them there Californer Sushi Bars...

Meredith, I think it was at Andrea II, and it is a Lettuce Sea Slug, I believe. Maybe two inches big.

Bob is just now converting all his raw underwater photos. Over a thousand shots. Two more hours and we'll get a look at them!

Nicki and Carole
When I was using film, I used 40 rolls a vacation. We just went all digital and I use a 128mb stick on every snorkel! I just want that warm fuzzy feeling that I must have gotten a good shot out of all the snaps. :-)
