In the interests of shorter threads, continuing this discussion here. Post away!

Jean, you need to look at the input side of the information, as in 120v/240v, 50/60Hz. is what you want to see. If you have ended up with a slow ( 9 hour) charger, try to get a quick charger and at least two sets of batteries.

I'm amazed that people get such good results with HQ, I mostly shoot in SHQ.

I only use Olympus rechargeable batteries. Second camera, same two sets of four batteries I started with four years ago.

Seb,

Our talk on Sunday convinced me that I needed a new "toy", so I got the Olympus 5050 and a PT-015 housing from Adorama the following day ;-)

I guess I'll have to play with it when I get home and post some picks (I'm on a flight from DC to Miami right now, just waiting to take off - airport is a real zoo already - American's last flights leave at Noon).

You crack me up, Jake. Did you get the orange filter, or do you have one already? I'll keep my fingers crossed for you to get home pronto.
If you can find a rubber cap that the add on lenses come in it makes a great cap for entrances/exits.

Jake,

Welcome to the cult : )

One accessory I recommend is the CLA 1 extension tube or facsimile:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=275171&is=REG

With this tube permanently in place ( lens cap on end), you will never subject yourself to the pain wrenching sound the gears make when you accidently turn the camera on before taking the lens cap off.

Not that I've ever done that.
: )

Nice thread about the digi-stuff. We have a olympus C-990Z with a pt006 housing. (old) But still, I think it makes pretty nice pictures, with good colors.
Maybe we will step up, also to the C5050.
But after my vacation in San Diego, I have to wait a while. (Or actually work a while, before up-grading).
But I bookmarked a lot of the pages mentioned in part 1.
Thanks for all the info!

And thank YOU for posting on thread #2, Diana.
Does the lens cap fit on the CLA-1 Robert?

Seb,

that's the concept. Place the lens cap on the end of the tube. Keep the tube permanently on the camera ( why not? ) and never have to worry about turning it on accidently without removing the cap. Another advantage is that the tube is more durable than the extended lens, so it adds a little more protection. One more thing, screw on a uv filter to protect your onboard lens.

Seb,

By starting a new thread, there are positive and negative consequences. Everyone who was connected to the first thread by posting and hasn't posted to the newer thread may be left behind in the discussion.

But of course, the dial-up modem BTers don't have to wait as long for downloading.

I think the best of both worlds would be to somehow link the two threads by software, if possible.

Bob,
I feel the lack of that uv filter as a guilty little pang in my heart, right next to the one about not having the same thing for the front of the housing(My color correction filter has taken that job.)
Behind those two is a third wish I had protected the back of the housing somehow before it got scratched up.
Will the camera with the CLA 1 fit in the leather case? I'm thinking not.
Threadwise, Jake asked us to keep them short. My thought was that by using the original title and 2 they would follow one another in the topic listing. Had I been cleverer, I would've posted the link to the previous thread in the first message I posted to start the thread.
Maybe it's time for a Olympus thread.

Bob,

Can you bring one of those extenders down for me next time you're down this way? ;-)

On my last trip up, a couple of weeks ago, I did just pick up an Inon wide-angle adapter lens, as well as the Inon macro lens. Still waiting for my Ikelite tray and slave sensor for my DS-125 strobe though...

Jake,

I'm hoping to be back in Feb 2004. If you don't have one by then, consider it done.

The Inon WAL gives you the option of adding their dome port at a later date. Good choice.

Although the 5050 has the super macro feature, the macro conversion lens allows you to be further away, offering a little more flexibility with lighting options. Another good choice, imho.

Did you order the manual controller or TTL slave sensor?

Bob

Jake,

If you're not aware yet, the 5050, DS 125, TTL slave sensor combination gives you complete versatility. That is, both TTL and full manual strobe selections including full, 1/2,1/4, and 1/8th power.

To achieve full manual strobe output, if desired, set the 5050 to slave mode. There will be no preflash, allowing full use of the substrobe's manual capabilities.

Actually, I have a couple of Nikonos SB105's around and it appears they may work too with the 5050's slave mode. We'll see next time I have time to dive and play (will be a few weeks, alas - lots of work piled up).
