Sorry to ask but what is shingles?? I thought it was like herpes or chicken pox located in mid section? Salt water is not good for it?

:-(

Marianne my understanding is that Shingles is caused by the same virus as chickenpox, and triggered by stress. I think a trip to Bonaire would be just what the Dr. ordered. My husband and I have noticed that cuts and abrasions actually heal faster on the island. Could be the salt water. The water there is soooo clean! If Hubby is feeling better and the Dr says OK, I wouldn't hesitate.

Shingles is the chicken pox virus that lies dormant in the body if you had CP as a kid...it surfaces when the body is stressed,or the immune system is weakened...with aging or with AIDS and other immune diseases..the symptoms can be mistaken for a cold ,headaches...stiff neck..and even a heart attack..a co-worker told me his Dad was in the hospital 3 days being tested for heart attack..the third day the shingles appeared on him..they look like supersize CP...but its the nerve endings that are effected along with the skin..the pain can be severe...the DR gave my husband a med that is given for herpes for the shingles.. and Percoset for the pain...having grown up on the ocean..whenever we had scrapes on our knees or elbows..,my grandmother would take us to the beach and have us soak it in the ocean.(during the summer of course)...she always told us that the ocean would help it heal....The Dr that saw my husband said that it would be ok for him to go on the trip..actully DR. said he went to Bonaire on his honeymoon. I asked David if he told him anything about the island and where he stayed etc...but David said he was more concerned about his pain at the time and didn't ask any questions about Bonaire..Darn him!!!!! Anyway..hope that answers your question...

Marianne is right, but let me clarify just a few things. #1 It is a form of herpes called "Herpes Zoster" It is VERY painful and does attack the nerve endings, usually along the spine, across the back, but it can attack anywhere. It is caused by the same virus family as chicken pox. Normally the only time you see people who get herpes zoster are people who had a very light case of chicken pox as a child. This little bugger lies dormant until stress, low immune system or some other medical problem allows it to surface. It can re-occur without warning at any time. When the little pustules (fluid filled little pimples) are moist and breaking the individual who has them is HIGHLY CONTAGIOUS so people who have had light cases of chicken pox, pregnant women should stay VERY FAR AWAY. Once they have dried up and gone (just like chicken pox) they are no longer contagious. Being a nurse and one who had a light case of chicken pox, I got them from a patient. We didn't know that the patient had them until they showed up 3 days after they were admitted. Consequently, I got them....VERY VERY PAINFUL...mine were in a VERY terrible nerve line...let's say I couldn't sit comfortably for many weeks (LOL)! It is important to keep up a healthy immune system and use stress busters (exercise and sleep being the best). Good luck, just be sure that when you leave for Bonaire, everything is all dried up! Could you imagine a plane full of people...oh no!

Liz

I certainly can't compare Shingles to my bad fire ant bites, but I will say that the only time my legs didn't bother me is when I was in the ocean! I think the salt water is very healing for that type of stuff. I hope you and your husband have a wonderful time!

My elderly neighbor has had shingles for almost 8 months now. Her doctor said she just has to wait it out although he did give her some medication for the pain. Unfortunately it kept making her dizzy and she would fall down, so she can't take it. I wish she would go see someone else who may have a better answer for her. Glad to hear your husband's doc gave the go ahead to leave for vacation. Stress-free Bonaire should certainly help.
