Hillary & Melissa Wedding (post 1)
I was going to wait ‘till after Hillary posted his pictures, but I just couldn’t wait any longer to post some wedding:
Brief history:
Hillary & Melissa plan wedding on Bonaire for early March; dates and locations change several times due to various reasons (one being it’s CARNIVAL Time!). Finally, at the Feb/Mar BT’er BBQ on March 1, final date/time/location are announced (the 4 th @ 5:00 @ Harbor Village Beach).
March 4:
We arrive at Harbor Village:
Jake & Linda, Jake’s Dad (the volunteer photographer), Jake’s neighbor, Kate Hickson, Josie Estill, Darlene & Tom Ellis, us (Chet & Jean), Hillary & Melissa (separately of course), the wedding coordinator & required witnesses, and the videographer.
Now, apparently, since it’s the final day of Carnival, government employees are given half-day holiday. Result, the Justice of the Peace doesn’t show-up; so no Wedding today!
We all celebrate anyway and go to dinner @ Gibi’s; wedding rescheduled for next night.
March 5:
Beautiful Wedding-on-Beach takes place and we all celebrate again!

(see next few posts for pictures of waiting around on the 4th & actual Wedding on the 5th)
Note: they are all captures from video, so don’t expect stunning detail

A group of us were having dinner with Jake and Linda the night Hillary and Mellisa got married. We had a large group, so we basically had a private room...except for one extra table.

Jake had invited Hillary and Mellisa to stop by with wedding cake and Champaign.

The story of their marriage was not known to most of the people in our party, and they did not know Hillary and Mellisa were stopping by.

So...about 1/2 way through dinner, a bride and groom in full wedding garb, enter the restaurant with their own cake and Champaign.

My brother and sister-in law were among the uniformed and just stared in disbelief as Hillary and Mellisa sat down at the only other table in the room...totally alone with this huge wedding cake.

My sister-in law got tears in her eyes because she felt so sorry for this bride and groom who obviously had no friends on Bonaire. When she got up to go talk to them and invite them to join us, Jake was already in action and introduced Hillary and Melissa to the group.

We all had a great time eating wedding cake and toasting Hillary and Mellisa.

Jake...pictures?

Scott

...and we're still married, sifting through hundreds of images! Thank-you Chet & Jake for posting such great pictures. Thank-you Scott and Sharon and everyone else associated with BT that was on the island during our visit.
I am trying to post images. I believe I have to "re-join" and purchase an annual membership in order to do so. When re-registering I get the dialogue that states only 1 account per email address. Anybody know what I should be doing? We've got some terrific images we would love to post. One slight misfortune: One of the 128mb digital cards had a format problem and couldn't be read. We sent it back to the manufacturer who claimed they could retrieve the pictures and burn a disc for us. We just got a call from one of the tech's that told us it "crashed" his system! Luckily they were not wedding pic's. Unfortunately they were Carnival Parade and snorkel pics from Klein & Andrea...perhaps a few windsurf images as well. Guess we'll have to return to get those shots again!!!
Here in southern NY state the weather has finally warmed up. Melissa & I have hung up the skis for the season (although there is plenty of snow left) and we have been out cycling in our bike shorts and short sleeve jersey's. This is the 2nd best medication for the Post Bonaire Depression Syndrome. 1st being stepping off the plane on Bonaire.....

I realize this isn't much of a trip report, but it is, however, a learning clinic for me on how to post images on BT.
On 3/1 Melissa & I showed up at Jake & Linda's BBQ where we introduced ourselves to everyone I had already sorta met on this web site. It was really great because everyone knew we were the 2 that were getting married on the 4th (...uhhh, the 5th?). Yes, well, everyone knows what happened. Mr. Coffee (his real name) the Justice of the Peace managed to miss the wedding he had scheduled for the 4th. This actually allowed a great photo opportunity for us because the sun sets much later than the 5:00PM time that was scheduled for the ceremony.
At the BBQ, which I had learned of via Chet's postings prior to arriving, we met Chet and his wife, Jean, Jake & Linda and their 2 wonderful children, Jake's dad, Ota, Andy and Suzanne, Jake's neighbor, Harry (probably mispelled and not pronounced the way it is in the US),
Kate, Kenny (a sailboard instructor from the Windsurf Place)...the list goes on. Scott & his wife were there and we were later introduced the evening of our wedding.
Here's a pic of the greatest host on Bonaire and Master Chef.....

My Trip report is going to be out of order. We arrived on 2/26 via AJ. No problems, no delays, just lowsy food on that airline. We got a FREE Red Stripe from Montego Bay to Bonaire. I noticed all the experienced Bonaire travelers had changed into their shorts at Montego Bay.
On the flight, I was staring down at the water to see if their were a lot of white caps on the ocean since, as any wind surfer knows, this is a sign of wind! And there appeared to be more on the windward side of Bonaire than any of the other islands we had flown over!
We checked into our studio apt. at the Divi and went out to dinner in town. I had heard that Capriccio's was one of, if not, the best place to dine on the island. We were somewhat lost in our search for it and went to another restaurant that 's name also began with a "C". As most people on BT know, all food sources on the island are imported, except for the fish and goats (I don't know if you can eat Divi trees or cactus?). I think Melissa & I ate fish twice a day on average, ate breakfast at Divi's buffet several times, drank lots of water & Amstel Brights....not to mention a few frozen Margarita's, wine, etc. HEY, we were nervous about getting married!....... anything to take the edge off!
One Note: We changed our room at the Divi. The studio we had was next to the road and the road noise started before the sun rises! We got moved to a studio right next to their dive shop with our back door right next to the gate at the south end of Kaya Charles E.B. Helimund (a very long name for the ocean front one way street.)
The first morning there I grabbed my swim trunks and Seal Swim Mask and took a long relaxing swim from Divi's beach up past Richard's Restaurant and then down past the town pier and back to the Divi Beach. The water was so salty I just glided on the surface effortlessly getting views of the sea floor, coral and a variety of fish. I swam over several divers as well in the 30-50 ft. depths. I flew down with a nasty head cold and discovered later that at about the 15 ft. depth my sinuses would not allow me to dive during our stay. A bummer, yes, but snorkeling and windurfing were still on the menu. After the swim, Melissa & I headed over to Sorobon at Lac Bay. This is the most beautiful bay I have ever seen in the Caribbean! Photos cannot duplicate the aqua tones of these pristine waters! I can't even get close with Photoshop!
Here's an image taken from right in front of The Windsurf Place at someone about to go for a sail and behind are these 2 little kids sailing. One just turned 4!

I am supposed to be preparing my taxes...good thing Melissa is working at one her client's offices today or I would be in BIG trouble!
Everyday we would snorkel, swim, windsurf and just explore the island. Here's a picture we took driving up north on the leeward side towards Gotomeer...

Anyone planning on traveling to Bonaire that wants to rent Mt Bikes should not do what we did: Without making reservations for bikes, we traveled down with our cycling gear, helmuts, shoes & pedals along with our hydration packs expecting to ride up in the park. Bikes were not available until the day after we were leaving the island. If anyone is a serious rider, spend the extra bucks and bring your own bike. The bikes were not all that great, a bit outdated and, as I said, not very available. Only bikes available were "clunkers".
I have know idea what image I am about to post here. Perhaps some of our fellow BTers....

A lot of these images I had re-sized...a few came in rather small (nearly 20k)
By the way...I still haven't begun preparing my taxes, Melissa is due back from the office in 3 hrs and I am starving! (and I'm all out of goat stew!)

Another shot I believe that Ota took of us.

The Modern Bride cover that Ota did for Melissa and gave to us on the "real" wedding day.

A picture I took around Boka Olivia.

Hey Thanks Annie. You know, since Melissa got the sailboard addiction, we'll be up on the Cape soon. We're having our reception in July at the Phinney House on 6A in Barnstable on July 18th. We'll be taking a long week-end June 22nd for my cousins wedding and sailing either Kalmus or Dennis (unless of course it blows out of the north).
In 3-4 hrs of sailing in 15-17mph winds, Melissa could point, tack, jibe and beach start! Bonaire is the best place to learn. The waters are warm, very shallow and the wind blows on shore. Here's some more shots from Sorobon to wet your appetite!

This picture was taken by Darlene Ellis. I really want to thank Tom and Darlene who not only took a lot of pictures with their own camera, but also burned a CD for us on their laptop and left a wonderful note in our sitting room at the Divi.

Our biggest thanks to Ota and his son Jake. (That's an interesting way of saying "Jake & his dad", isn't it?) Without Jake and this great site that he created, none of this would have been possible.
