Nukove was one of my absolute favorite dive sites on Bonaire until the waves of Hurricane Lenny laid waste to the underway channel leading to the sea and to the coral. Damage extends down to more than 20 meters (sigh)....

On the down side...it can be a little tough getting down to the water.. and every time I have been there. the bugs have been equal to the legendary Minnesota or NJ mosquitoes...

The mosquitoes are how I keep my blood pressure down, by the time I get to the water I have no blood left...

a bonfire in that crevice at the rear of the beach will keep the bugs away...the damage from lenny though...i was hoping i was just there on a bad day - but no, it's trashed...

Bob, trust us.. a bonfire would only serve as a navigational aide for the bugs.. down by the water is not hateful but is real small.. the parking araa above has always been a) very prone to break ins b) a nw definition to buggy... the dive itself has always been nice..

yeah, our "landlord" warned us about safety out at nukove...the only other folks we saw was the beach patrol (that trip was in june)...the fire was nice for cooking ribeyes and brats, we gathered wood along the road down - may have been some mesquite in the pile...i did fall in love but it only lasted a couple of hours;-) ...i went back and dived it the following december - sand all over everything down to 60' ...did see a huge swarm of sardines or something being escourted by a large baracuda, had heard that whale sharks have been seen near those swarms, and while harmless, large objects make me suck air like crazy - i got out of the water quick...size of the beach had decreased noticably...

we dove Nukove in April. A very tough entry-I think much tougher than before Lenny. However, the dive was fantastic-we even saw a sleeping shark! AND-there was a patrol car cruising there, just checking-probably a response to the petty theft, which we appreciated.

Two concerns to be aware of at Nukove. One is that building fires on beaches, blackens the sand, thus ruining the 'white' beauty that brought you there initially. And, the beginning of the sea turtle reproduction season is starting and that beach, believe it or not, is a nesting beach. So, please be careful. I've been silent for too long, but enjoying all your posts.

How silly of me. The two concerns I just posted should include all of the beaches, not just Nukove .

Barry, you and your concerns for the turtles and beach of Bonaire are MOST welcome.

Nukov has been a long time favorite of ours, I didn't know it was a nesting area, glad I found out.

I have done some diving, but it's not the same as Bonaire, for sure. Hi Michael -

Hi, I'm new to this group. Enjoyed the info on Nukove. Nukove was my very first shore dive post Lenny. I thought I was not cut out for shore diving but soon found out how wonderful shore diving is at other sites on Bonaire. Nukove beach is small and very private and out of the way. I will picnic there in the future and always be on the lookout for nesting turtles. Thanks for the information.
