ok, so here is my day so far...oct 14, 2008....mucho grande wind and waves started bout 2am...wind was in reverse of usual direction...was pushing waves on shore on west side...kind of like east side bokas on a killer day...just had to drive into town and check out wave action on shore drive...WOW...shore road closed...so of course i got out and parked and did what any non thinking person with a thrust for adventure would do...i walked along the shore drive...me and a lot of locals and a handful of dutch...pouring rain,,,waves jumping over sea wall and hitting other side of street...yikes dorothy this isn't kansas, or maybe it is...ankle deep in water and waves breaking on me or rather spray from huge shore breaking waves...so awesome to see...look down toward southern part of road and can see a line of shore breaks just like hawaii surf movies...only here people are walking down a street filled with restaurants (which were all closed by the way)...have to admit wondered if i'd get knocked off my petite little feet right on my non petite arse...hung around down town for about an hour or so...then decided to drive south past my place at lbr and see what the sea had to say further south...as i drove further south wind diminished a bit and water calmed, but not quite to normal...the windmill was moving at a snails pace i suspect because they may have put the brakes on it if possible...not sure about that...but wind was still blowing down there and usually when i ride by on my bike even with a nudge of wind it goes..,. did a loop around and back to lbr...only to have my neighbor come knocking a few minutes later...she asked if i had gas in my truck. why? says I..oh says she cuz last time the water came up this close to condos we had to evacuate and there was a foot or so of water downstairs in the units...she says its a commin' again...yikes...just bought my place and furniture and this was not good news...she says governor is coming to take a look (seems like they know him) anyway gov comes and i'm out front looking at the water creeping up the gravel intent on making my downstairs a swimming pool and i hear a male voice trying to get my attention...none other then the gov hisself...wow, i'm impressed...then he says "your lights are on in your truck>" oh, oops talked about being embarrassed almost as bad as being told at the bank that one of the 100 dollar bills i was trying to deposit was counterfit...(yup, honest injun happened yesterday...was thinking ah oh am heading to the big house now for sure) ok thank you tho gov for telling me bout the lights.. so i didn't actually meet the gov, but i do know what he looks like...this is a pretty ironic happening cuz a few weeks ago i stood in line at 5am in the morning waiting to get a number so that i could indeed talk to the gov re: residency...gov was sick that day and the next week also...but i am detouring off my day...so now with this new info from my neighbor i start to worry a bit about floating shoes and furniture and blown out appliances and floating rats and roaches and all the other assorted creatures which may be using my downstairs as a recreational facility...then two fire trucks show up...they are assessing the situation and may put up sand bags which i have to tell you is not going to make a very big difference at this stage...oh and did i also mention that my condo is in the middle of being painted? yeah well the guy worked all day yesterday and i don't really think it's had a chance to dry....oh and also in the middle of all this he shows up and wants the reminder of his money which i'm loath to give him cuz i'm still waiting for a handyman i paid 2 months ago to come back and do some repairs to damage he did while installing screen doors....so my neighbor translates and the painter guy hops in my truck and off we go to the bank...get the money out of the bank and am sitting in a parking lot counting it out for him...i get a flash back to the 60s and what a cop in the states would think of this scene...so that is my trip report of today, just an ordinary day on bonaire...i love this place i truly do...oh also one other thing, i had a hallmark moment on my way to town this morning...just past harbour village the water were washing over the street and all the small fishing boats were all pushed up against each other just jonesin to hit the pavement and float away...a bunch of guys were trying to haul them out and get them on a trailer as fast as possible and they were all smiling and working and dealing with it with no attitude...this sort of overwhelmed my soul and mind and a became really emotional...afterward i figured out it was because of the pure simplicity of the action...and it also demonstrated the pure simplicity of the island that makes me love it so...pasa bon dia to all....(later gator)oh and one more tidbit...the female dog is in heat after being spayed last week (go figure) and the two males who are fighting over her are scaring the pea out of her so i bring her in the condo...so that leaves the two males growling at mega watt levels outside my front door...oh and none of these dogs are mine....end of tail....

Thank you for an informative, entertaining and funny report, Sandy. We're soaking all this up since our group of 7 arrive on Saturday and head for Elkadia in Belnem just down the street from you. Thanks again.

Thanks for the info. Our group of 4 will be arriving saturday morning and heading for Lighthouse Beach resort.
Are we going to have problems with water in the condos ? Please give me an update on the conditions. Thanks so much.

Hi Ken, I own a unit at LBR and I just talked to folks staying there. My unit is fine, no water or damage to it. I am not sure what unit you are staying in, but I would suggest that you contact the owners/realtor to inquire about it. I know the center parking area is a lake right now and the waterfront units had water coming up within 5 feet of their homes yesterday, do not know if any actually went into any units. I have heard no reports of it. Sorry to not been more of a help. This time of year with heavy rains, wind reversals, flooding does occur on island, it doesn't mean that properties are automatically flooded. Try not to stress. Inquire directly to whoever you are renting from for accurate info.

Thank you !!
We are trying to decide if we postpone our trip for a month or so. We love to snorkel and would want the reef to calm down a bit.

Ken, I would postpone if you can do so, will take at least a week or more for water to clear up after this passes. Will not be the best conditions for snorkeling to say the least.

Thank you.
We were able to postpone until Nov. 14 - 22.
Hopefully things will be back to normal then.

hi bill and donna..glad you liked the report...storm seems to have passed...even saw a hazy sun this afternoon...one thing i've learned about the bonaire other than their happy attitude about life is that they are quick to clean up town after parties, fireworks and storms...people just get down and get it done here...hope you enjoy your stay and happy to see that you are still planning on coming down...the way i look at it is that it is always an adventure to see what the sea has to offer beneath it's surface. in bonaire you will always find something wonderful...by the way i know where a white frog fish was a couple of weeks ago and an orangish reddish sea horse...also try and dive salt pier during the day. bas noij (aka OB1)is a great guide for it and he will get necessary permits also. it is really an awesome dive...if you feel like having a tag along on a dive or two send me an email. i'm always looking for peeps to dive with...ayo...happy diving

Ken
If you wanna hang out with a real cheezy guy (long story), we'll be there from 11/15-22 as well (3d trip). Look for the portly Willie Nelson imitator, with red/blue northwest indian art tatoo. Or just yell...JOOOOOOOEEEEE
I aint escared of architects....tho bleu cheeze concerns me greatly.

Cheezy Joe
