Just wanted to finish what I started. For those of you who remember our trip was canceled on 6/4/05 since air jamaica canceled the last leg of a trip I booked through Delta.Sanddollar was great and refunded our stay. This is about Travel Guard Insurance which many of you said I should have bought, well I did and they denied my claim for the hotel room we stayed in the night before the trip.I was told it was carrier caused. If it were not for the nice people at sanddollar WE would have been out a lot more.I could not find any thing about this in the policy but I warn anyone who is thinking of buying" travel guard insurance" beware!!!! WE will be looking for other companies for our next trip.

DAN is now partnering with Travel Guard to provide trip insurance to divers through DAN's web site so I went in and read the terms and conditions of Travel Guard's Trip Insurance. It states that Travel Guard won't cover losses due to carrier caused delays. Bummer James.

We also had a bad experience with Travel Guard insurance. We bought insurance primarily for protection from hurricanes for a trip to Little Cayman Beach Resort 7/16 to 7/23. Hurricane Emily was bearing down on the Cayman Islands and I called Travel Guard a couple of days prior to our departure. They told me that our policy only covered us if the flights were canceled. In other words, if the airlines flew, then we were going on the trip. They didn't care that we might not be able to dive for 2 to 3 days of our dive trip. It turned out that Continental Airlines, Cayman Airways, and Little Cayman Beach Resort let us book another date at no charge. I have no plans to purchase trip insurance from Travel Guard in the future.

I was not told of this by the travel guard agent And I can't find it in what I was sent. I bought the most expensive package they offered.I wanted to post this to make other people aware that taking AJ is a risk and that I do not know how you can protect your self against what happened to us.

Paul, It sounds like DAN might be better for a dive specific policy? Knowing a little about insurance I can understand why an insurance company will not cover if the airline is flying. What policy would cover that?? I understand not wanting to go for your just reason but can you imagine how much policies would cost if customers could choose whether or not to go?? The price would be astronomical.

With Mr. Tate, what happened is he had filed a claim for trip interruption from a situation that was carrier caused. Unfortunately this is not covered and it is stated in the certificate of insurance he had received.

No company covers all situations in life and no company has the perfect solution. My advice to the consumer: Read the policy before buying so you are not disappointed. If they do not cover something you wanted them to cover, then it is your fault for not reading and buying carefully. Please take this with respect and not a finger pointing speech..I know how frustrating insurance can be..hence why I sell Travel Guard. I still believe it is a good sound policy.

Interesting story: As a travel agent IATAN, our licensing board offers insurance. I went to FL for a windsurf event and brought gear. I read the policy and it said it covered luggage from damage and loss. Well, my board was damaged. Guess what? Not covered..surf boards and windsurf boards are NOT in the clause. Did I check before hand? Nope..my fault..even tho I felt it was rather bogus...oh well for me..

My wife and I recently went to the Cayman Islands (July 1-10) to dive. We spent the first few days on Little Cayman diving the outstanding Bloody Bay Wall. Fantastic!

On Monday, July 4, we returned to Grand Cayman for the rest of our vacation. We dove Tuesday and Wednesday. However, with Hurricane Dennis bearing down on the Caymans, the winds picked up and all the dive operations shut down. We got cheated out of two days of diving.

We did have trip insurance with Travel Guard but it never crossed my mind to file a claim because the weather changed and we couldn't dive as much as we wanted to. I had read the policy pretty carefully before buying it so didn't even consider filing a claim. Perhaps if we had pre-paid for diving it might have been different.

We have purchased trip insurance from Travel Guard for several trips. Fortunately, we've never had to file a claim.

The only place the words "carrier-caused' is used in what I was sent is in connection with missed cruise connection in which case it would be covered. Please don't pea on my head and tell me it's raining. This should have been told to me by the agent I talked to for 20 minutes or clearly stated in the policy.

Has Travel Guard been asked to show/shown explicitly where this exclusion/policy is stated in the material sent to insureds? Surely they have an obligation to do that when denying a claim.
