As I mentioned in my trip report we have been astonished by the sudden appearance of a big manta ray while cruising from Sand Dollar to Eden Beach on Friday, May 27th. We were in mid waters, at around 8 to 12m depth, far away from the bottom that was below 25m there, when the manta appeared and started circling around my dive buddy, Miguel Lopatin, who managed to take some pictures of it. He was using slide film and the images have been scanned. I was too far to take pictures on my own, but could enjoy the view of the manta for a few seconds. Here are 3 of the images....

We can't complain for a first time visit: manta, frog fish, sea horse, many turtles, dozens of eagle rays, lots of all kind of reef fish...., great weather, what else can you ask?

Wow! That is one lucky, rare sighting! Can you give an estimate of how big the manta was?

well, that is a difficult question... to me, that I saw it from a distance, it looked big, perhaps up to 1.5m to 2m wing span. But... in the water, without the reference of a diver or the reef, it is very subjective.

December 2001 I was just snorkling at Windsock Steep, when suddenly a couple of manta's arrived; one adult an her youngster!!
Great view how these airplanes of the sea move themselves in the water.
Unfortunally I did'nt carry any photo-equipment!

Later on that day I went diving at Red Slave (with Bruce Bowkers') and we met (another?) manta.

My day couldn't be better!!
