My wife Jean and I along with 8 others just completed our Bonaire experience. We flew AA from St. Louis to Bonaire by way of Dallas and San Juan with no problems. We had rentals from Budget that were ready when we arrived (the paper work did take some time). We had a one bedroom at the Sanddollar on the ground floor. The Sanddollar may have been a great place to stay at one time but I believe that the financial problems that they claim don't have are very real. On our fourth night of our stay someone broke into our condo with us in the room. The criminal was scared away when we turned on the light. This person was not looking for equipment, as every patio in the complex had dive gear sitting out in the open. This person headed straight for our bedroom door, which was locked. When I reported this to the office when they opened no one got excited. They sent someone over to fix the back door but nothing else was ever said. We knew from other members of our group that theft was a problem at the dive sites, so we never took anything of value in the vehicles. That did not stop the thieves from ransacking the trucks. This time the police happen to stumble over the criminal. He was arrested and hauled to jail the police then waited for us to exit the water and then asked us to go to the police station to file a complaint, which we did. The police told us that most of the time they can not get tourist to take the time to file a complaint so most criminals have no fear of being caught.
Our mini crime wave aside, we had great diving. I made 23 dives over 6 days. We saw all the mythical creatures Bonaire is famous for including Seahorses and frogfish. We dove 19 different sites, and I enjoyed them all.
One other note, it has been mentioned here before about merchants and restaurants over charging or failing to give the exchange rate. This was repeated over and over during our visit. When we called the clerk or waiter on this they usually just said they made a mistake. If it was mistake a lot of people are making the same mistake. While dining at the Terrace restaurant we asked to have a pitcher of Pepsi brought to the table since there was a group of ten people, we were trying to save the waitress some leg work. When the bill came the pitcher of pop was $14.00 US. I guess I should have asked, but who would have thought that pop would be that much. We questioned the waitress about the cost but were told that the price was correct.
We met some wonderful people on the island, but they were offset by a handful of rude and crude individuals. Will I return to Bonaire? maybe after I hear that crime has been reduced and the restaurants have learned some new math.

Terry glad to hear your diving was good :-)
Sorry to hear about your experiences with crime and the over charging! Good to hear the police waited for you and that you filed a complaint.
Did you have a favorite dive? Favorite creature(s)? My favorites are the juvenile spotted drums :-)
