Just got back last night. Had a great time. I will write a trip report sometime this week. I took my Olympus C2040 digital camera underwater for the first time. Actually, this was my first attempt at any type of underwater photography. Had alot of fun with it. Here is my favorite picture:

queenangel

I will post more photos later as well.

I took over 300 pictures above and below water. Some are good, some are not. I will have them on a website this week. I had a blast taking pictures underwater. And the digital camera helped me improve in a hurry. By the end of the week, I could take a pretty decent photo.

Greg, you must be really proud of these. They're beautiful. Made my morning full of vivid memories. Thanks!

Niki -

Thanks, I really am quite proud. I am not much of a photographer. I've always been a point-and-shoot kind of guy. This doesn't work underwater. I am really happy with how well the underwater photos came out. This was my first crack at it. I took quite a few good pictures, and a number of bad ones as well. Overall, I greatly exceeded my expectations.

Cindy -

The cat was rubbing his face on the little tree stump. There were 3 or 4 cats running around Buddy's Dive Resort. On a couple of occasions we had the doors open and they would stroll on in. We had been feeding them on our patio, so brought this on ourselves, but didn't mind a bit as we are cat lovers.

Am I seeing things or is your highlight of the week a whale shark?

OOPS, sorry. I just read your image title. Eagle ray. Must have been wishful thinking.

It's an eagle ray. Although a whale shark was spotted here Friday near Thousand Steps, I think.

It was an eagle ray, Caught me off guard and the resulting photos were terrible. That was the best of three. It was an impressive animal.

Beautiful pics, Greg. I've resisted the urge to get UW photo equipment, thinking that I couldn't take really good pics anyway, but these pics are fabulous! I'll look into the camera that you mentioned. Thanks!

What housing did you use? Flash?

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Greg Lambert on Monday, February 18, 2002 - 5:07 pm:     Edit PostPrint Post

I used an Olympus PT-010 housing. Very reasonably priced at $249.00. Rated to 100 feet. I took it to 97 without any problems. It took a a bit of a beating on an ugly exit at the Hilma Hooker as well. I fell and stuck my hand on an urchin (OUCH). No damage visible to the housing. It's pretty tough. I did not use an external strobe. Just the flash that is on the camera. The 2040 (2 megapixel), 3040 (3 megapixel), and 4040 (4 megapixel) are all virtually the same camera. I have had the camera for a little over a year. I would buy it all over again with no regrets. You can get it online for under $400.00. The 3040 can be found for a little over $500.00 online. The 4040 can be found for a little over $600.00 online. I don't know that I would buy the 4040. A little too much money for me. And arguably overkill. The 3040 is worth a look. Again, I am very happy with my 2040. Maybe in a year or two when the 4040 is being phased out and is selling for a few hundred bucks I will upgrade. They all fit in the PT-010 housing, so I wouldn't have to be another one.

Nice going on the Photos Greg. You did a terrific job for a newbie photographer. I think I will consider a digital U/W set up. I like the fact that it is instant gratification or instant deletion. Best of luck with it Always!!!

Greg, where did you see the Eagle Ray? My wife and I saw one at Andrea I a couple years ago. Caught us by suprise too (of course) on snorkle out to begin our dive. Made one lap then off into the blue...

We saw the Eagle Ray at Karpata. It was in about 80 feet of water. It was our last dive of the trip. Great way to end our diving!

Greg,

Awesome photos! Ooooo...I am ready to go and NOW! Love going digital. We have a Sony Mavica digital with an Ikelite UW housing. This will be our 2nd year using it and we're getting ready to buy a slave strobe for our setup prior to this years' departure:)

We would love to see a ray! Karpata is one of our absolute favorite dive sites on Bonaire. You can just free fall to.......wherever LOL! Not sure where the bottom is but at 233 ft. we didn't see it. What a dive site!

Most memorable citing for us was a pod of dolphin several years back. We were hanging out mid water at Windsock and in they came to see us & what a thrill; of course NO CAMERA :(

Thanks for sharing your photos; you did an awesome job!!!
