Last year in February my wife and I went to Bonaire (for the 1st time) and had any excellent time. Sunning, swimming, snorkeling, windsurfing, and mosquito swatting at night! The locals told me that the amount of bugs was due to the heavy "rainy season" they had that year. What's it like this year? We're going back again the first week of February.

A lot less rain so far. My mosquitos are trained not to bite me so I can't comment on thier thirst, but bring some repellent just in case.

I was on Curacao and Bonaire last year in january. According to the local paper last year's rain was the worst in 65 years. So I suppose it won't happen every year.

Definitely bring some repellent. We experienced last year and it was worst than the previous year. But, even that year, during the evening hours we needed to cover up and use repellent on exposed areas. At least, I did, my husband is more macho and put up with some bites. I can occasionally get a VERY bad reaction to a bite, so I don't risk it.

You can purchase bug stuff locally... be warned the DEET content is VERY high but works great!!! You just have to de-tox when you leave Bonaire.

I am planning my first trip to Bonaire in mid-late April. WHEN is the rainy season? Will we
miss it?

Thanks,
Carmen

Hi Carmen,

I wouldn't worry about rain much in April.

"Rainy season" is a bit of a misnomer for Bonaire, considering the island normally gets about 20 inches of rain a year.

Traditionally, "rainy season" is actually from September through December or so, and all it means is that you're more likely to have rain showers than not. A rain shower usually lasts about 2-10 minutes, and is typically followed by blue sky shortly thereafter.

That's a far cry of what rainy weather was like back in the U.S. (NH & Mass.) where it would rain for days on end, regularly :-)

It is always amusin' and confusin' how many fully suited
divers (including me!) run for cover in a rain shower!!!

Jake,
Nothing like rubbing it in-- As you are aware the northest just had a major snowstorm. 12"-36" depending where you lived-- Here in Foxboro, Ma 14" of concrete fell. Blew 2 snowblowers--- The Andover area was even luckier with 30". The Ma & N.H coasts took a beating with the 10' tides and 20' waves.Alot of beach erosion and flooding. Another snowstorm expected Fri.
SURE WISH WE WERE BACK ON BONAIRE

Gail,

I do understand why girls run from the rain--sugar and
spice do melt away. No one wants that.

Jan,

Linda's mom lives near Concord, NH so we've been kept up to date on that cold white stuff falling (and our friends Dan & Faith - co-founders of the WebCams live in Bolton, MA) sent us updates as well - it all helps remind us why we live on Bonaire now... :-)

Glen - I must have been in the wrong line when they were handing out sugar & spice because I love to walk in the rain (when it's a warm rain and warm day) and I've never hand a melting problem yet. So what if I look like something the cat drug in - it's just too much fun. When I was a kid I used to run and splash in the puddles (without shoes- it felt better on the bare feet)
