According to official 1999 estimates, approximately 360,000 persons are living with HIV/AIDS in the Caribbean, which includes Spanish, English, French, and Dutch-speaking nations and territories.

There was a significant HIV/AIDS problem on Bonaire during the late 80s - early 90s, mostly due to an influx of Haitian and Dominican prostitutes in the Rincon area. (And, in some cases, spreading to the tourist population.)

Since NA altered immigration policy the incident rate has dropped significantly, however, the Caribbean basin is still second only to Africa in HIV/AIDS infection rates. Sexual contact of any kind (safe or unsafe) with the local populace is not an advisable activity. Education, literacy, and cultural treatment of women within 'Latin' communities continue to have detrimental effect on Caribbean society.

Unfortunately for a female friend of mine, her penchant for promiscuity while on a Bonairean vacation during 1992, most likely caused her death from AIDS in 1993.
