This -for Bonaire mega- operation started around 2:30 am this morning. Simultaneously, 18 heavily armed officers wearing bullet proof vests went in seperate teams to 4 different addresses on Bonaire. The addresses were in Antriol, Antriol Pariba, Sabana and Tera Kora.

Thanks Kitty. Our fingers are crossed that this is the beginning of turning the corner. I SO want to be able to visit Bonaire again and not have the fear we were burdened with during our awful experience when we visited in 2003. And more importantly, for the people who call Bonaire home, I wish for you the peace of mind and safety you deserve.

One of the guys (Ellery N (for Nicolaas) was recently released from Bonaire prison. The reason was that the prison does not meet certain standards. I guess this means you need a minimum of 17 inch flat screen television and an extra bathroom and couple of more things for every cell.

By John Carter (BonaireTalker - Post #100) on Friday, October 29, 2004 - 1:37 pm: |
Just curious does Bonaire have a prison? Seems to me good use could be made of the slave huts and some razor wire.

In speaking with one of the officers involved with the investigation, it appears that they had been pretty much aware of these creeps. The radio mentioned their full names, which to me make a lot of sense. It appears the group involves a brother and sister and most of them had full time jobs. The real sad thing is that they are from Bonaire, dispelling the Curacao connection.

Assuming these are the right guys (and all indications point that way), it's critical that the police do not simply assume their job is done and they can stop being vigilant and proactive.

Excellent news. Just by coincidence I purchased our 2005 Bonaire tickets yesterday. This makes the next trip even better. I am so glad this trash is off the streets and hope they remain off the streets for a very, very long time. I hope they can find a place to detain all of them and NOT let them out again as has been indicated here. That is worse than a revolving door pattern here in some of the major US cities, etc. Ship them off and away...far far away forever. It would be nice, tho....I'm so glad for everyone on Bonaire and their direct victims, as well. Carole

Someone locally who recognizes the names (reportedly there is a long history of criminal issues with some of these convicted individuals) believes a few of these individuals are originally from Aruba. There is a NICE big jail over there overlooking the sea. Send them there!

Jake has it right. The police need to use this as their motivation for addressing all forms of crime on Bonaire. They can make a difference when they apply themselves as a force. Having said that, let's not jump the "gun" and assume that since an arrest has been made that the guilty party/parties are off the streets. Your posts sound much like the current press that has people charged and convicted without knowing all the facts. I say get the facts and evidence to prove their guilt before we pass judgement, then let the guilty ones have it. IMO.

Jake & John A., amid the rejoycing that this bit of good news brings, it's good to see people who can still keep a cool head, enjoy the thrill of the moment, yet stay objective. Indeed good news, and long overdue for the Bonaire PD. Let's keep in mind that that unless effective measures are taken, things will get back to the way they were before. Thefts that will increase in magnitude and dare by the month, with people denying the existence of a problem, until the next ugly event happens. Jake is right. Every single little thing should be reported to the police, and to make it more effective, brought up to this forum. Let's all take a respite from those tense few days, give our support to the victims, enjoy the moment, hope for the best but keeping our senses alert. I mentioned I would not return to Bonaire unless something concrete was done. The arrests are by no means sufficient. Time is needed to see whether the honchos have implemented effective solutions to the problem. Nevertheless, the island's summoning is irresistible. My wife and I have been talking about it, and we really miss it. Even prior to the news, we had decided to return. Of course, we'd lodge in a resort with security and take the precautions that saw us safe during our visit in January. The situation is reasuring, but we will stay alert. Too bad Gibi is closing... We would've loved to hang out with the BTs. There will be another chance. My best wishes to the victims and I hope they see justice done. Coach Izzy

I'm intrigued by the "guilty because they were arrested" vibe on this string. Yes, it's great that someone was arrested, but isn't there a trial process that has to happen next? Not completely sure how this works in Bonaire, maybe someone can share.
|
By seb schulherr (Extraordinary BonaireTalker - Post #1733) on Sunday, October 31, 2004 - 3:35 pm: |
Brian, if they were found with guns, that is a crime in itself. So, contrary to some opinions, I think that makes the island a little safer.
|
By Al Schroedel (BonaireTalker - Post #48) on Wednesday, November 3, 2004 - 8:36 pm: |
Safer on Bonaire because "gulity were arrested"? Surely wish it were so. Raj and his wife (Garden Cafe) were attacked and robbed Tuesday evening at closing time. No other details, such as possible physical harm, known at this time.

By Israel A. Sanchez (BonaireTalker - Post #95) on Wednesday, November 3, 2004 - 9:01 pm: |
So the arrests were not deterrent enough for the low-lifes, and it seems that there are more to boot. My best wishes to the poor victims who were only earning an honest living. I understand that the prosecutor is working hard to see legal action, but something more drastic and impressionable needs to be done pronto before things do get out of control and the people start taking justice in their own hands. Thanks for the info Al. Coach Izzy

Just to expand on what Seb said, it is a known statistic that there are less robbing and attacking crimes in areas where people are allowed to carry guns. Definitely a deterrent if you have to wonder if you sneak into someone's house, you're going to be met by a shotgun pointing at your head. Might think twice about doing it. IMHO of course.

Seb, picture this! I am walking down the street, and some thug runs up and tries to grab my purse. Instead, I pull out my cute little "girl" gun... and say, "Nice try, jackass -- how about YOU give me YOUR wallet instead and we call it a day?" LOL

By Marabeth Owens (Experienced BonaireTalker - Post #326) on Thursday, November 4, 2004 - 1:42 pm: |
I don't know Kelly - I kind of like it. Reminds of the "legend" of the elderly woman who got to her car after shopping only to find 4 guys in it. So she pulled a gun out of her purse, yelled at them to get the heck out of her car and they ran like hell. Then she tried to start the car but realized that her keys didn't fit - she was in the wrong car. And they guys were already at the security area trying to explain about the old lady carjacking.

By Susanf (Extraordinary BonaireTalker - Post #1022) on Thursday, November 4, 2004 - 2:27 pm: |
One thing we were taught when we took classes in gun-ownership and use, don't pull a gun if you don't intend to use it. Hesitate, and it can be taken from and used on you.
|
By Susanf (Extraordinary BonaireTalker - Post #1023) on Thursday, November 4, 2004 - 2:32 pm: |
I tried to edit that, but I was too late. It should be "don't pull a gun if you aren't prepared to use it if need be".

Yep, me too. If someone is breaking into my home, more then likely there is bad intent and it wasn't just a case of mistaken identity. I pretty much know where my home is, what it looks like, what my furniture looks like, if my key works, if those 4 dogs are mine - you know - stuff like that...
