What sorts of food can I bring? Good cheese? I missed that last time! Other party foods?

I have in the past brought just about anything you can imagine, with no problems at all. We still bring homemade spaghetti sauce, home smoked meats, etc.

Folks talk about bringing frozen marinated chicken breasts, steaks, etc in their checked luggage with no problems. By the time they arrive the food is ready to put on the Barbee the first night. It seems there are no restrictions, unlike returning to the US.

I should have mentioned that you can can get lots of great cheeses in Bonaire; it is/was a Dutch island after all. If you like a really sharp cheddar do bring it with you. After nine years I've found that part of the fun of the trip is buying in the local stores. DO NOT buy only US labels. As an example, If the jar looks like peanut butter but has an unfamiliar name and a pic of a peanut on it, you're safe to try it at 1/2 the cost. Experiment. That is how we found frozen Filet Mignon at Warehouse for $3.00 a pound. Have a great vacation. It's hard not to.

The Warehouse grocery store address is Kaya Industria 24, but it is easy to find- off the road to the airport just north of Lisa Gas. web site is www.warehousebonaire.com

Thanks Melissa

This must be fairly new - have been visiting Bonaire since 1978 and have never been there. Our walk from Divi to Cultimara is always a first order of business. This looks like it's not walkable from Divi, right?

Actually the opposite is true. Warehouse is only half the distance that Cultimara is from Divi. I checked it on Google Earth.

Just walk straight inland on the main road that ends at the Divi resort. Warehouse is just beyond the intersection with the "gasstation"...

I guess over 30 years we've never walked down that road! I expect that we will be in the future.

Thanks.

The Warehouse is great but, you might need to know that you can not use your credit card unless you spend at least $50.00 US (it used to be $100.00US). Also, as I am sure you know, you'll want to take your own grocery bags.

They also carry beer/wine/liquor, so you can pad your bill upward with that...

"you can not use your credit card unless you spend at least $50.00 US"

Fascinating. That violates the terms of their being able to accept the credit cards. They can be penalized by the CC company for this. At least, that's what the CC companies told me when I set up to take them for my consulting business. I doubt grocery stores have a waiver!

Diane, are you sure?? I thought they waived that rule a long time ago and it was posted here.

I shop the Warehouse a lot as we are there for 6 weeks every spring. When we were there last spring (08)I asked the lady at our register and she definitely said $50 US. We happened to buying just a little so were using our MCB debit card so she had no reason to "discourage" me from using the visa card. However, knowing how things go, that could have been inaccurate too. Anyway, I'll ask again next spring but, I always plan the grocery shopping around the various stores and what I know they usually have and when they have it. It's kind of fun.

Not to re-stir the pot again, but I posted a recent experience with bringing food to Bonaire on the "Local Items" thread under "Customs Charges."

Some people reading my encounter did not take kindly to my story not that I care but what happened did happen and in the way that I described.

No matter how you read my story, just be aware that you may or may not be taxed on food that you bring into Bonaire.

Interesting Will... I'll check your posting. The two times I've been to Bonaire I've brought a cooler full of meat to grill and some cheeses - higher dollar items. We always shop for our perishables, fruit, bread, etc, but bring meat and cheese with us.

The first time (Feb 08) not a word or a problem.

The last time (Sep 08) I'm having a conversation with the guy xraying our goods - "You have to pay tax on that." I say, "Why? It is for personal use, I am not reselling it?" He says, "You have to pay tax on that." I say, "No, I won't." The items aren't easily marked for their $$ value. As I am fluent in Spanish I also began to converse with the gentleman in Spanish. Eventually he throws up his hands and waves me through. A sign of things to come? A sign of the way things already are? I hope not.

Hello All,
A few friends of mine suggested that I pack a cooler with meat. Is it really worth the effort of packing frozen meat and cheese in a cooler, adding dry ice, and paying extra baggage fees? Thoughts...?

When I brought meat and cheese in we just froze them solid for a week or two, then filled the cooler with them. They kept just fine - they will hardly thaw out at all in 24 hours and then you can just put them in the fridge when you arrive. Dry ice is not necessary - UNLESS you were putting them in a cardboard box with no insulation or you didn't freeze them in the first place.

What are common prices you will see for meat per lb? Anything else you would suggest I bring? Any ideas/tips would be great.
