A chapter from Lonely Planet:
Visas: U.S. and Canadian citizens need a passport and return or onward tickets. Others must bring visa, passport and those all-important tickets.

So, my question is, do Europeans really need a visa as well, or was L P wrong ?

If your country is a E.C. member no visa needed, just a valid passport will do.

The usual procedure is a "Tourist Visa" that you fill out on the airplane with the exceptions listed on the above page that require a real visa.
