Dear BT'ers

I have a few questions, because I have read a few things here.
I just read a story, that someone saw an scorpion when putting on her diving gear.

Are there many scorpions on Bonaire, en how dangerous are they.
Are there any other animals that we need to be careful of?

greets

Hi Bart

I have yet to see a scorpion in Bonaire. I know they exist but they don't seem too common. Donkeys and goats wondering in the street are what I am most afraid of. They make terrible hood ornaments. :-)

I've seen several, all smallish, and I've never experienced any stings.

any dangerous animals ?

Be carefull not to swim during discovery shark week!

The scorpions are very small and when you get stung it feels like a whasp stich.

Well I saw the one that was inside my dive beanie down near the road by White Slave. In 6 trips there that is the only one I have seen and I wasn't too happy to see it as I was one instant away from putting it on my head. :-/ If it had crawled inside the leg of my wetsuit I would never have seen it. I only relate it because I had never thought of looking inside my dive gear in between shore dives and I admit I don't look too much now, but I do check my beanie!!

Yes, fire ants - I once stood on a nest wearing only flipflops. And I thought I didn't know how to dance.

I will attest to the scorpions as my first full day there I was checking my dive bag and all of a sudden this God Awful jabbing pain, worse than any wasp sting, in my finger. It was a scorpion that nailed me and after he found his soul I took his picture so the people at home would believe me. I was scared at first but if you have any allergy to bee or wasp stings bring your epi pen. It hurt for 24 hours except when diving, salt water under pressure took the pain away.

If you want to find scorpions at bonaire: throw wet closes at the ground and look after a few days. Scorpions likes to hide themselves in clothes who has a moisture-content. No guarantee, but a big chance to see them. You don't have to kill them, they do no harm. Only when they feel you are a thread for them. So place them outside. We also don't kill every bee or wasp.

I am not sure about the "no harm" statement. When i looked up the species information online for the Yellow Bark Scorpion (Centruroides testaceus), it says they could be fatal to babies and small children. Granted a sting to a full grown adult may just make you feel bad (assuming you aren't allergic to them), so in that case i guess they aren't that bad for you. Also, i found this in my bedroom. I don't care if it was a spider, anything that crawls around in my bedroom is getting squashed.

Carol, glad you liked the slide show and thank you. sorry the full like was broken up, i am not sure how to make it stay intact with this forum.

What is the "snake" you refer to? I saw one many years ago and couldn't figure out what it was. Anyone have data on it? A name?

Per the Washington Park website: The only snake on Bonaire, Culebra di plata (silver snake), is not bigger than good-sized worm. The one I saw was quite thin and about 5 inches long.

Does anyone have a picture? I would like to confirm that we're talking about what I saw.

BTW, I like snakes, they're cute.

John, sorry, no picture. Even though they are called silver snake, the one I saw looked more black. So "picture" thin, black, 3-5 inches long, could be mistaken for a smooth piece of string. Sound like what you saw?
